This video aims to show the MCA in everyday practice, the video is a scenario based on a patient refusing care please think about the questions at the end of the video and try and answer them in the form within the “what did you learn section”.
What should a health care assistant do when someone refuses care?
Staff should:
- Staff must explain to the risks and benefits of treatment to a service user in a way that they can understand.
- Document methods used to try and persuade the service user to have treatment
- Staff has to assess service users capacity to consent
If service users do not have mental capacity:
- Staff have to make the decision in the best interest of the service user
- If the service user is very resistive to treatment staff have to evaluate if using restraint to administer treatment is proportionate to the risks.
If service user has mental capacity:
- Their decision is final.
- Treatment cannot be administered unless they consent.
